I maintain that those of us working in the IT field nowadays are the Postal Workers of the new millennium.
I blame (the effectively now defunct) Sun Microsystems:
- They pushed Java.
- Because of Java, hordes of ne’er do wells (- who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a computer, let alone a development IDE -) think that they are coders and are employed in IT rather than doing something they’re suited to, like shoveling dirt.
- Prior to Java, C++ was king. C++ quickly exposed the dross.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of folk out there who cut their teeth on Java, but actually _can_ code and/or run an IT project – My observation however, is that the latter are a distinct minority.
