So, after reading this thread, I thought it would be a good idea to come up with different squadrons for people to look at  and hop into or out of depending on the situation, instead of having to puzzle out the fine details in-game by themselves. The squadrons listed are not hard-and-fast rules, but more of guidelines to help members quickly form a team for an intended role.

These roles range from pure pvp to support roles like search and rescue. So even if you don’t pvp or like powerplay, I encourage you to take a look anyways. You may see something you like.

So, in order to quick-reference things easier, here are a few keywords as for the types of squadron roles:

      • Aggressor: Aggressor squadrons are meant for operations into enemy space. They balance low rebuy cost with pvp and pve potency. These squadrons are perfect for contesting other faction’s powerplay expansion operations and sabotaging  enemy systems.
      • Interdictor: Interdictor squadrons are pvp focused. They are for hunting down, interdicting, and destroying a single high-priority target. Interdictor squadrons are perfect for defensive pvp operations within patreous space.
      • Fighter: Fighter squadrons prioritize ease-of-use and longevity within instances such as R.E.S. sites, tactical strikes, or combat zones. More geared towards PVE, fighter squadrons are prefect for shooting down NPCs with your buddies, or teaming up to raid strong signal sources.
      • Patrol: Patrol Squadrons balance jump range and firepower. They prioritize quick response time. Patrol squadrons scout for the enemy. Once found, the other patrol craft can jump in to assist. Often patrol craft can wing-up with a trader. That way, the patrol fighters can do missions or cargo runs of themselves, but when the trader is attacked they can use the jump range to quickly respond even if they are in different systems.
      • Clandestine: Clandestine squadrons are responsible for interdicting and seizing valuable cargo. They balance firepower with cargo space and speed to mass-lock and pirate ships containing valuable goods.
      • Trainer: Trainer squadrons are for sharpening pilot skills within A.I. They use small ships with low rebuy costs to teach the fundamentals of pvp to new pilots.
      • Search and Rescue: Search and rescue squadrons prioritize jump range, fuel capacity, and cargo space for fuel transfer limpets. They are meant to rescue commanders which have found themselves out of fuel and out of luck.

My next post will list some squadrons that came to mind. If you have any roles or specific squadron builds you’d like to add, please do so! This thread is a reference for the entire community, and is not meant to exclude anyone!

Below are some squadrons people can use as reference. Ever squadron has a name (for fluff and fun!), a role (as described above), the ships required, notes on if any specific equipment is needed, and a motto (for fun!)

Name: Imperial Postal Service“, 1st tactical aggressor squadron, 14th Mercenary division.

      Role: Aggressor

      Ships: Imperial Courier X4

Notes: Interdictor must be equipped on at least one craft to threaten players and high-value NPC targets, here’s the sepcific thread

      Motto:  “Going postal since 3301”

Name: “Argon’s Wrath”, 1st elite interdiction superiority squadron, Argon’s personal mercenary contingent.

      Role: Interdictor

Ships: Fer De Lance X3, Clipper X1,

Notes: An interdictor is required on all ships. We may not even have three FDL, but the point is, all the ships should be loaded out for PVP, be fast, and be able to outgun or mass-lock anything it comes across. The clipper takes the role of a support ship for any wings that may show up, while the FDL’s concentrate on single-target damage.

      Motto: “Vengance for Armrend”

Name: “Darkstar” 1st fighter squadron, 7th mercenary group.

      Role: Fighter

      Ships: Vulture, Courier X2, (Open)

Notes: Couriers can be swapped out with vipers or upgraded to vultures depending on ship availability. An extra slot in the wing is left open for any ship that wishes to join.

      Motto: “Out of the Black”

Name: “Longroute” 2nd patrol squadron, 2nd mercenary reconnaissance group.

      Role: Patrol

Ships: Diamondback Scout X2, Courier X1, (Open)

Notes: An open slot is left for a trader that is in need of a light escort. This squadron should be able to chase off most light threats. Hostile clipper pirates may require more firepower.

Motto: “Knowing is half the battle”

Name:Screaming Eagles” 18th Mercenary training squad, 1st tactical training group.

      Role: Trainer

Ships: Eagle, minimum of X2, up to X4.

Notes: Sidewinders can also be used, but the squad name IS screaming eagles, after all.

      Motto: “SCHREEEEEE

Name:”Imperial Rescue Service” 4th mercenary squadron, 1st mercenary logistic and support group.

      Role: Search and Rescue

Ships: Diamondback Explorer X2 (Open), (Open)

Notes: Fuels scoop, fuel limpets, and a cargo bay to hold those limpets is needed. Open slots are the ships they may be rescuing, for ease-of location with the wing function.

      Motto: “Your Last Hope”

Name: Warlock” 9th freelance wing, 13th espionage task force.

      Role: Clandestine

      Ships: Clipper X2, (open), (open)

Notes: At least one clipper should be equipped to carry some cargo as well as hatch-breaker limpets.  Open slots depends on what ships are the intended target. Whatever ships go in the open slot, they should be able to mass-lock the intended target of the piracy. I.E., pirating anacondas requires using an anaconda. However, pirating most targets should be do-able for the clipper.

Motto: “Now for a magic trick!”

I like that a lot.  Perhaps also a Heavy Squadron of some type?  Anaconda, FdL and an escort or 2?

Heavy squad would be like a grid superiority group that would come out of supercruise and dominate the grid with excessive firepower.

Though I imagine 3 or 4 wings of those and you call it a fleet.

I think a heavy squad would be best suited for support/defensive role. 2 Annies, 1 FDL/Clipper, 1 vulture/courier. The idea is to drive aggressors away, 2 Annies are tanky enough and able to do ridiculous damage (focus fire 8 x C3 beam lol) if the enemy decide to stay and fight.

And pretty hard to escape due to the massive mass lock.

This is a good idea.  Queen Latifa is slowly getting stronger by the day now.  Insurance is building nicely.  It’s still capable of trade but is becoming more combat focused now.

I’m thinking of fitting my C2 & C1 hard points with missiles as well. We can spam missiles after the shield is stripped and watch the enemy panic (if the enemy has EMC though, we are kinda screwed, but no one use EMC anyway).

Well , you guys are talking about lots and lots of credits for a group where we are still casual,  In regards to the Anaconda fleets.

Either way I indorse this thread and it’s ideals

This is true, however, some of the commanders we have are quite flush and we already have 3 Anacondas that I know of.  It’s certainly do-able.  In fact, we can even fast-track some people with ‘creative trading’ if required.  Half the battle is purchasing the ship, from there, gaining more funds becomes a little easier.

I like the idea of a heavy formation. In the original post I kept in mind ship cost versus their effectiveness for the role.  I tired to keep it under 1 mil because anything over that takes a long time to get for the new players. Keeping a low operating cost ensures  that people can actually form these squadrons.

Also, I’m not sure what role the anaconda squad would play besides being awesome. While it can mass lock, anaconda’s speed leaves something to be desired. Still, since nothing but another ‘conda can masslock it, it can essentially disengage at will. . . (trails off into stray thoughts)

If such a squad should form, I’d be happy to help test it’s combat effectiveness. Perhaps @vyvian and I could skirmish against 3 combat fit anacondas to see what they are best suited to?

I’ll think up a name and edit the second post in a bit, once I think up of a role for it.

      Angeli Shield?

      Overwatch?

      Hammerfist?

A group of snakes can be called a Den, Nest, Pit, Bed, Knot.

      Food for thought

Yeah, they’re certainly not really geared towards chasing people down, more the last defensive line in home systems or even heavy support for another squadron.

Yup, Python & Annies are best for supporting/defensive role.

For the squad name, how about the “Flying Brigs.” (pun intended)

Also, testing the combat effectiveness is a good idea. However, i can only participate after i get my ADSL connection back though (will pay the internet bill today).
