On a Saturday night, three of our Commanders took a chance and ran with a new idea from CMDR @Crimshadow. We set off for a nearby system and started mining with this technique; We had @Kestril in his Anaconda as our mobile refinery and freighter. Then Crimshadow and I, in our Cobra MK III and Asp respectively, would search for Painite. We would then call our friends, mine the rock together, and make lots and lots of money! We got to the point where even rocks with 13% Painite was just not worth our time! 9 Collectors Limpets running at once, 2 Prospector Limpets, and three beautiful ships!
That night we made mining fun, and surprisingly profitable. I would seriously suggest everyone give this a try at some point. It is worth the time!

Yes! It was very fun and surprisingly profitable for the time put in(about as much as trading with an average route in a fully-laden t-9.)
Here are some more screenshots:

This is awesome as soon as i have time to get back into elite mining sounds fantastic!

If you see any of the CMDRs mentioned, just tell us. We all decided we wanted to do that more. Love to run with you!

This really went above and beyond my expectations. Running(sometimes boosting) around an asteroid field hunting for only the very best rocks to mine. No joke, after we practiced the mechanics and learned what we could really do, we would only take rocks that had~20% Painite or higher. Wing mining is very doable.

Count me in next time round, I might fit out a Python or an ASP, or i could refit Berta the T6 and act as a collector depending on what roles need filling.

For sure, but I don’t think the T-6 could get enough limpets going. I needed greater than 5 to collect stuff in a timely manner and not sit at every painite ‘roid all day.
Though I think the best mobile refinery currently in game would probably be the t-9.
It can get 10 limpets going with more cargo space then what I could manage with only 9 limpets on the anaconda.
I’m still keeping my anaconda though. It’s more maneuverable so I’m able to get closer all the fragments.
That said, if anyone wants to experiment going in a normal RES or high-intensity res, the fourth person in the wing could bring a combat ship and act as escort.

from what i read unless they changed it,
when we did a CG for this we were using the smaller ships to be dropped to by a conda as it couldnt land at the small pad…
from what i read and understood is that the limpets actually work better when the you are alone.
IE the best productivity was for the conda to drop in normal space drop a load to a waiting ship hit SC to next and then drop more the limpets for each collector would then work better as they dont work that well when both are in the same space.
edit: yes this is still a bug.
so the best work would be to have to ship we are loading just a small distance away and then each smaller ship sc to it drop cargo SC back. or have an intermediate carrier…

I didn’t notice anything of the sort with 2+ hours of mining last night. Only the refinery bug.
Just to be clear the small ships are not collecting or refining the raw ore. Only the carrier ship collects. The only limpets the small ships have are the prospectors. (and one collector to get their share at the end)

All good, was simply sharing my understanding 😛
keen to help out.

Great effort guys, we had been talking about this for a while, it is good to see it done.
I’ll come get some video of you guys next time you are doing it.

Glad to see the enthusiasm Xannz! I’ll keep my anaconda mining-fit. The minimum wing size needed to do this is 3, but 4 would be great as we could focus on only painte and almost double the profits.
I’m thinking a wing could look like:
MCS (Mobile Collector Ship): Anaconda, T-9, Cutter,Basically anything with a large hold and with bunches of limpets.
MRS (Mining reconnaissance scouts): Asp, ???
It has to be more agile, but also have enough cargo to preferably take their cut of the painite in one transfer. The asp fits, maybe the cutter. A keelback or T-6 might be an option if they load up on prospector limpets so they can chain-fire them at many different distant asteroids.
So maybe two faster scouts that chip away before prospecting and then one “scout artillery” which shoots at lots of prospector limpets everywhere with a high-end prospector controller. The T-6 or an asp would be ideal for that maybe Or maybe that’s what the clipper could do? @sketchy @Xsannz @crimshadow @foxcarignan I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
That’d be great sketchy! I’ll make sure to invite you next time we do this. Get some good footage and if anyone has editing skills we can make a shiny video. (Or video guide)

Makes sense. I think that the idea of “Scout Artillery” is something we might want to try, but it should not require much more equipment than a normal scout. Would you like to try that out on our next outing? I’ll take Maddylyn out as the MCS and the rest o’y’all can scout.

After some coriolos I think the python could do the job well.

144 prospector limpets to fire with reckless abandon.
So the ideal wing might be
1 refinery
2 scouts
1 arty
If all ships go in different directions to scout, it’ll cover a lot of ground.

InactiveRank: FoederatiI would put some mining lasers in the large hardpoints on the python but have some true weapons on the large hardpoints like turreted beam lasers or pulse lasers

Hey @sketchy is work still in the way of game time? Our mining expedition got delayed and we still need somebody else… 😉

Muhahahaha! The revenge of the NA timezone!
*Cackles*
We still need one more. Here’s to hoping @foxcarigan can log on. Or one of the new players we’ve picked up in the last few weeks.
Be sure to log onto teamspeak, too. As we may have to work around server issues.

InactiveRank: FoederatiHey when is the next meet-up of the mining team? I would like to join in on the fun and mine with some of my buddies. I currently have an asp that is outfitted for mining. I hope to join in on the fun. I would like to get a python in the next few weeks so this is going to be a really big boost to the funds I currently have. I currently have 40 mil and 3 mil from mining over the period of a week, the downside to this is that I have a 68 ton capacity asp so I can’t carry that much in cargo capacity of minerals and metals. I can put a big prospector and a small collector controller to maximise profits on my asp so we can look at the asteroids and collect the minerals/cargo for these trips. As it stands I have 3 ships at the moment 2 asps and a courier. One of the asps is outfitted for trading and LRS and the other as mentioned before is for mining. The courier is obvious it is for combat. I am thinking of buying a Vulture to be my main combat ship instead of my courier as it is weak against large ships. I’m thinking of putting my courier in storage and have it when I have to do Angeli demonstrations and secret missions from Damorgs. The 2 asps I have currently I will be keeping them when I acquire my python, when I do get it I will be outfitting the python to mining so we can do more mining. As for my mining asp I will be outfitting it for missions for Angeli to be an all-round multi-purpose ship.

I’d definitely be down for a mining run. I have an ASP Explorer that has a refinery and prospectors/collectors, but reading further up it seems you guys have it streamlined. Happy to re-outfit with whatever’s required.

InactiveRank: FoederatiWe will need some time to organize the meet so I think we should go to a lightly populated system close to our base of operations like the newly acquired Hip 20638 to mine and the convenience of close to home mining.
Also @foxcarignan can organise the meet with me and we can get the adequate ships to mine together.
Also when we are out there the bigger ships have the power to tell people to go as well as the cargo ships if there are any. -
